Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you today; and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way which I command you today, to go after other gods which you have not known.
– Deuteronomy 11:26-28
In Max Lucado’s Hermie and Friends, the garden is all abuzz when Buzby, a misbehaving bee, storms onto the scene and claims that breaking rules are cool. That buzz grows into an all-out roar as Buzby, the Misbehaving Bee, wreaks havoc on the safe serenity of the garden and almost gets everyone killed. Buzby shows absolutely no respect for The Garden Golden Rules. But Buzby finally becomes a devoted rule follower – fast! – when the King of all creation steps in and Buzby learns what rules are.
Just like Buzby, we too must follow rules because they are all around us in this world. God gave rules to us to follow so we would keep ourselves out of trouble and from destroying our lives. The first rules given to us were The Ten Commandments written by our great Creator Himself.
Rules are important in our world, not only for helping us to do right but also to protect others from bad actions. If we lived in a lawless world, imagine how horrid everything would be with people doing everything they wanted and not giving any thoughts to God or each other. Even little things, like obeying our parents when they tell us to do our homework or turn off the television, matters. Our parents, like God, tell us things that will keep us from harm.
If we are humble and willing to listen we can have peace and true joy forever in our lives. Only with true obedience from the heart can blessings flow from God to us. Following the rules is totally cool!
