Women of the Word: Peter’s Mother-in-Law

The healing of Peter’s mother-in-law by Jesus the Christ takes place in Matthew 8:14-15Mark 1:29-31, and Luke 4:38-41. She was sick in bed with a fever. After Jesus healed her, the Bible says “she served them.” Here we find a simple lesson we all can learn.

1. Peter’s mother-in-law served the Lord. With one touch from Jesus, the life of Peter’s mother-in-law was changed for the better. To show her appreciation and gratitude, she got up and served Him and His disciples.

Like Peter’s mother-in-law, if we are followers of Jesus, our lives have also been changed for the better. The Gospel of Jesus has saved us. He has given us strength and light, peace and love. He has promised us a hope and a future. Since we have been redeemed from our sin and healed from our past, what are we to do now? We are to do what Peter’s mother-in-law did and serve the Lord.

1 Samuel 12:24 reads: “Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you.” After all the great things God has done for us, it is only right for us to serve Him.

One of the best ways we can serve the Lord is by serving others. Whether it is giving food and water to the hungry, toys to an orphan, clothes to the homeless, or visiting someone in prison; God says whatever we do to the least of these, we do it unto Him.

We weren’t put on earth to only take care of ourselves. We can only be completely satisfied and fulfilled when we help and love others. Since we have experienced the healing hand of God, it is now our duty to introduce other people to the Heavenly Healer too.
