Story Scripture: For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. – 2 Timothy 1:7
Story Saying: Let us not pray to be sheltered from dangers but to be fearless when facing them. – Rabindranath Tagore
Behind the Story: Oh, how splendid it would be if we did not know how to shudder! The boy in our story is a more than excellent example of what it means to live a life free from the binding grip of fear. He was confronted with a “ghost,” hanging dead men, and numerous evil spirits, but none of it made him afraid.
Too many people waste days and years living in fear – in fear of what others might think of them, in fear of what they could become, in fear of what the future holds. Unfortunately, fear is something we all have to deal with at some time or another; but we do not have to let it control us.
The spirit of fear is not of God. We should embrace the things that are of God – a spirit of power and a spirit of love. Fear prevents us from being the confident people we were created to be. In Christ, nothing and no one should make us shudder (maybe unless we’re doused with an ice-cold bucket of water filled with slimy fishes).
