Focus Verse: The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust in an idol or swear by a false god. (4)
God requires for those who would approach Him to be clean in body and soul. He will hear those who do not trust in themselves or in others, but only in Him. Those who can stand before Him will be blessed.
Focus Verse: Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. (5)
Because his trust is in the Lord (verses 1, 2), David asks God to teach him His ways. When our faith is in the Lord, we will also want to be guided in His truth and be taught His paths. David shows humility with this request. He does not assume that he already knows all there is to know about God.
C. S. Lewis said: “In God you come up against something which is in every respect immeasurably superior to yourself. Unless you know God as that – and, therefore, know yourself as nothing in comparison – you do not know God at all. As long as you are proud, you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”
Focus Verse: Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind. (2)
When God allows difficult times in our lives to test our faith, not many of us welcome them. But in this verse David is actually asking God to test him and try him (not something I’ve ever done), because he wanted to make sure that his life was pure before the Lord. In verse 2, David asks God to examine his heart and his mind.
We would be wise to not resist the tests God sends our way, but embrace them. God sends us through fire and rain to make us stronger. He places us in uncomfortable situations to push us closer to holiness. If we endure His tests with appreciation, we will come forth as gold.
Focus Verse: My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. (27)
Jesus the Christ knows us by our works. We are His sheep if we listen to Him and obey Him. We are His sheep if we follow Him. We cannot truly call ourselves followers of Jesus if we do not believe in Him and if we do not listen to His voice and His Word.
