1 Year In God’s Word: Day 212 — Psalm 116-118, 1 Thessalonians 4

Psalm 116
Focus Verse: Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live. (2)

God takes time to listen to us; shouldn’t we take time to talk to Him?

Psalm 117
Focus Verse: For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord. (2)

We praise the Lord for His greatness. We praise the Lord for His love. Just as God Himself will last forever, so also will His faithfulness towards us.

Psalm 118
Focus Verse: I was pushed back and about to fall, but the Lord helped me. (13)

In previous verses the psalmist tells of how he conquered his enemies. They were cut down not in his name or in the name of his sword, but in the name of the Lord. He did not fall because the Lord helped him. The psalmist gives credit to God for being his strength, defense and salvation. As followers of Jesus the Christ, we can do great things because it is Him who gives us the grace and strength to do great things.

1 Thessalonians 4
Focus Verse: Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. (13)

When we place our faith in Jesus, death holds no more power over us. We don’t have to fear the grave because it has already been conquered. Death does not despair a believer. Death is only the glorious, necessary end to a new, eternal beginning. Death allows us to shut the door on a cursed and fallen world and open another door where God is waiting to wipe away all our tears from our eyes. A door to Heaven where there is no more death, sorrow, crying or pain.
