1 Year In God’s Word: Day 224 — 1 Chronicles 4-6, 1 Corinthians 7:1-19

1 Chronicles 4
Focus Verse: Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request. (10)

Jabez’s mother gave him a name that sounded like the Hebrew word for pain. He was labeled with sorrow and grief at his birth. It looked like his future would be one of doom and gloom, but with one prayer, Jabez changed his life for the better forever. Some may look at us and label us “hopeless” or “failure” or “worthless”, but we don’t have to let negativity dictate our future. We can go to God and ask Him to bless us and give us success; if we are obedient to Him, He will grant our request.

1 Chronicles 5
Focus Verse: They were helped in fighting them, and God delivered the Hagrites and all their allies into their hands, because they cried out to him during the battle. He answered their prayers, because they trusted in him. (20)

The Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh were successful in battle not because they had 44,760 men who were skilled in fighting; but because they called out to God in the midst of their fighting. It is important that we do not just say words when we pray. We must truly believe that God hears us and trust that He will answer our prayers.

1 Chronicles 6
Focus Verse: They ministered with music before the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, until Solomon built the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. They performed their duties according to the regulations laid down for them. (32)

Here we read about some guys who served as temple musicians. A few verses later we read of how Aaron and his descendants served as priests who offered altar offerings to make atonement for the people of Israel. Both jobs were necessary and important and had to be done according to God’s commands. Even today, different people are gifted to do different jobs in the kingdom of God, but each job is necessary and important. God needs all of us working together to perform the duties that He has assigned us.

1 Corinthians 7:1-19
Focus Verse: Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches. (17)

No matter what situation we may find ourselves in, we are to live as believers by abstaining from sin, loving others and keeping God’s commands.
