1 Year In God’s Word: Day 226 — 1 Chronicles 10-12, 1 Corinthians 8

1 Chronicles 10
Focus Verse: Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord; he did not keep the word of the Lord and even consulted a medium for guidance. (13)

Saul died in a sudden and violent way because He was unfaithful to God. After being crowned the first king of Israel, Saul forgot the One Who had given him that position. He turned His back on God and started doing things his own way. As we read yesterday in 1 Chronicles 9, the kingdoms of Israel and Judah fell to Babylon years after Saul’s death, because the people were unfaithful to God. When we make the decision to follow Jesus the Christ, we must be determined to follow Him 110% – in all things, all the way. Jerry Bridges said, “The faithful person is one who is dependable, trustworthy, and loyal, who can be depended upon in all of his relationships, and who is absolutely honest and ethical in all of his affairs.”

1 Chronicles 11
Focus Verse: When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, he made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel, as the Lord had promised through Samuel. (3)

David was just a teenager when he was anointed king by Samuel. It wasn’t until many years later that David actually became king over Israel. Amid killing Goliath, fighting the Philistines, befriending Jonathan, fighting some more Philistines and running and hiding from Saul, God never forgot His promise. All throughout the Bible, we can read the promises that God has made to us and we can be certain that He will fulfill every last one of them – no matter how long it takes.

1 Chronicles 12
Focus Verse: Day after day men came to help David, until he had a great army, like the army of God. (22)

Thousands upon thousands of men from all twelve tribes of Israel came to join David after Saul’s death because they knew that God was with him. And because David was obedient to God, they knew they would have success.

1 Corinthians 8
Focus Verse: Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live. (6)

We came from Christ. We live because of Christ and we live for Christ. He is all and all is Him. There is nothing higher and no one greater for which we exist.
