1 Year In God’s Word: Day 234 — 1 Chronicles 20-22, 1 Corinthians 14:1-25

1 Chronicles 20
Focus Verse: In another battle with the Philistines, Elhanan son of Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver’s rod. (5)

God helped David kill the giant Goliath. He helped Elhanan kill Goliath’s brother, Lahmi. In verse 6 of this chapter we read that God helped Jonathan kill a huge man who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot. Whatever the name of the giant is that you are facing in your life – be it Fear, Anger, Depression, Poverty or Sickness – God will give you the victory over it if you have faith in Him.

1 Chronicles 21
Focus Verse: And God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem. But as the angel was doing so, the Lord saw it and relented concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. (15)

David was right about the mercy of the Lord. It is very great. Even though David had done something evil in the sight of the Lord and had to experience the deadly consequences of his actions, God remained compassionate toward him and toward His people of Israel. He did not destroy them completely over this one sin. One reason the Lord was merciful toward David is because David immediately confessed and repented for what he had done wrong. Contrite hearts will always find mercy and forgiveness in the hands of God.

1 Chronicles 22
Focus Verse: Then you will have success if you are careful to observe the decrees and laws that the Lord gave Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged. (13)

This theme is one that is repeated throughout Scripture. In Deuteronomy 31:6, Moses encouraged Joshua: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. In Joshua 1:9, Joshua encouraged the Israelites: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. And now in 1 Chronicles 22:13, David encourages Solomon: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged.

God does not want His children to live lives of weakness, fear and discouragement. “I, the Almighty, am with you wherever you go,” God says. “I made you and I love you. I will never leave you. I will never forsake you. Therefore, be strong and courageous. Do not live in fear.”

1 Corinthians 14:1-25
Focus Verse: As the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!” (25)

When followers of Jesus the Christ are gathered together, unbelievers should be able to see unity among us, not division; clarity, not confusion. The Gospel and God’s Word should be presented in a clear, intelligent and comprehensible manner. When we worship, can those who do not yet believe God sense that God is really among us?
