2 Chronicles 23
Focus Verse: Jehoiada then made a covenant that he, the people and the king would be the Lord’s people. (16)
As followers of Christ, we too are the Lord’s people. We belong to God and our behavior should back up our belief.
Focus Verse: Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. (13)
Despite their past persistent sin, the prophet Joel tells Israel that if they truly repent and return to the Lord, He will turn away His wrath from them. The same goes for us today. God knows we are imperfect people and might fail Him often, but He is gracious and compassionate. He does not abound in anger, but love. It does not matter how great our sin may be, if we return to Him with all our heart, God will leave us a blessing instead of a cursing.
Focus Verse: Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears. Let the weakling say, “I am strong!” (1)
Solomon said it best in the book of Ecclesiastes: There is a time for everything: a time of war, and a time of peace. Even though they have not always been perfect, the Jews are still God’s chosen people. God loves them and one day He will judge all those who hate(d) them. But when the judging of the nations is over, Christ Himself will rule from Zion and all the earth will be at peace. Isaiah 2:4 says, “They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.”
2 Corinthians 10
Focus Verse: For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends. (18)
It does not matter much if we give ourselves a pat on the back for doing good works or if others praise us for doing good works. Do our good works have God’s approval? At the end of life, only His commendation is going to matter.
