Focus Verse: Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “I will punish the king of Babylon and his land as I punished the king of Assyria. (18)
When the people of Israel turned against God, God often used heathen nations to punish them. This did not justify the idolatry or pagan worship of those heathen nations. It did not mean that God was blessing those heathen nations; but it did show that He was not blessing Israel on account of their disobedience. However, when the people of Israel repented and turned back to God, God always delivered them from their enemies and brought them back into the land that had been promised them.
Focus Verse: We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain (19)
Our hope and our soul is securely anchored in Jesus the Christ. We can be certain of our eternal future because Jesus is in Heaven to ensure that we too will one day join Him there. Jesus said, “I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also.” We can be firm and confident and greatly encouraged that Jesus will do what He promised because it is impossible for God to lie.
