Focus Verse: “‘In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line; he will do what is just and right in the land. (15)
Jeremiah prophesies yet again about the coming of Jesus the Christ. The days that fulfilled the prophecies concerning Christ’s first coming have come and gone. It may seem like a long time, but we can be certain that the days are coming, when all the prophecies concerning Christ’s second coming will also be fulfilled.
Focus Verse: I have determined to do this city harm and not good, declares the Lord. It will be given into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will destroy it with fire.’ (10)
It is a fearful thing for unsaved sinners to fall in the hands of an angry God. It is an equally fearful thing for saved sinners – those who have experienced His love and those who know to do right – to have God determinedly set against them because of their disobedience.
Focus Verse: Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. (26)
Jesus the Christ doesn’t have to come down from heaven to earth and repeat the death-burial-resurrection thing all over again every time someone makes the decision to believe in Him. No, Jesus came once for all people, to do away with all sin, by sacrificing Himself. Just as we live once and die once, Jesus was sacrificed once so we could have salvation. While hanging on the cross, He declared “IT IS FINISHED.” The greatest transaction to ever take place in the history of humankind was completed. Done. Over. The next time Jesus comes, He will not come to bear sin, but to bear us away into His eternal rest.
