1 Year In God’s Word: Day 311 — Jeremiah 43-44, Hebrews 11:20-40

Jeremiah 43
Focus Verse: So Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers and all the people disobeyed the Lord’s command to stay in the land of Judah. (4)

Before they heard the word of the Lord, Johanan and the people who were with him promised Jeremiah that they would obey the Lord whether what He said was favorable or unfavorable. They lied. Here we see that when God’s word was not to their liking, they refused to obey it and did what they thought was best. Our dislike for some of God’s commands does not mean we have the right to disobey them.

Jeremiah 44
Focus Verse: Again and again I sent my servants the prophets, who said, ‘Do not do this detestable thing that I hate!’ (4)

When we are in the wrong, God often sends people into our lives to urge us to do what is right. Their words of warning may be harsh and unpleasant, but we would be wise to pay attention and listen to them.

Hebrews 11:20-40
Focus Verse: Since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. (40)

What is this better thing that God has planned for us? It is the clear gospel promise that whosoever believes in Jesus the Christ, will be saved. Even though they did not yet have this promise, the Old Testament heroes of faith believed in God anyway. One day, we will be perfected with them because of our faith.
