1 Year In God’s Word: Day 342 — Zechariah 1-4, 3 John 1

Zechariah 1
Focus Verse: Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Return to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’ says the Lord Almighty. (3)

When people disobey the Lord and stray from Him, they open the door for His presence to depart. But His immediate reaction is not one of anger or punishment. His reaction is a plea for those waywards to return to Him so He can return to them. Even if one chooses to stay away from God for years and years, His call is the same: Return to me.

Zechariah 2
Focus Verse: And I myself will be a wall of fire around it,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will be its glory within.’ (5)

When God restores Jerusalem, the city will have no need for walls because God Himself will surround it and protect it.

Zechariah 3
Focus Verse: The angel said to those who were standing before him, “Take off his filthy clothes.” Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you.” (4)

As with Joshua, Satan often stands on one side of us with words on condemnation. He sees us in our filthy clothes (sin) and accuses us. But God comes along and rebukes Satan. He speaks words of encouragement to us and strips us of our filthy clothes. He does not see us in our sin, but clothed in the fine righteousness of His Son, Jesus the Christ.

Zechariah 4
Focus Verse: So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty. (6)

How can we do great, humanly “impossible” things for God? Not by our might or in our power, but by the Holy Spirit of God.

3 John 1
Focus Verse: Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God. (11)

Christ is the source of all good, therefore we ought to imitate Him. Doing what is good and godly shows that we are His followers and God is our Father.
