Taylor Swift Theology: Cold As You

“Cold As You” is the fifth track from Taylor’s 2006 self-titled debut album, Taylor Swift.

No surprise here, there are some cold people in the world. They are more frigid than an Arctic night in the dead of winter. The guy who Taylor sings about in this song is one such person. He takes the very best of her while leaving her feeling nothing. He does whatever he wants. He doesn’t really want or appreciate her.

You have a way of coming easily to me
And when you take, you take the very best of me
So I start a fight cause I need to feel something
And you do what you want cause I’m not what you wanted

He doesn’t reciprocate the love shown to him, and he fakes his way through their relationship until she comes to the wise conclusion that he isn’t worth being with anymore. She wants him to walk away and stop defending his cold behavior.

Oh what a shame, what a rainy ending given to a perfect day
Every smile you fake is so condescending
Counting all the scars you made
And now that I’m sitting here thinking it through
I’ve never been anywhere cold as you

There are two types of relationships that we often find ourselves dealing with – low-maintenance relationships and high-maintenance relationships. In low-maintenance relationships, we get along well with the other person. We fit together like a hand in a glove. Of course, we have problems, too, but they are few and far between. High-maintenance relationships, however, are far more turbulent. We never know where we truly stand with the other person. All of our talks end in an argument. They give us the cold shoulder, expect us to take their snide remarks, and demand what they want when they want it. They bring rainy endings to all of our perfect days.

You put up walls and paint them all a shade of gray
And I stood there loving you and wished them all away

Are we expected to live in the turbulence that cold, high-maintenance people create? No. We can go on loving them, but we don’t have to wish their walls away. We don’t have to let them continue scarring us. Sometimes, the best way to show people who don’t care for us that we love them, is by leaving them.
