New Testament In a Year: August 4 – Romans 8:1-21

Romans 8:1-21
(1-11) Life in the Spirit
Because of sin, everyone deserves condemnation; but those who are in Jesus the Christ have been set free from condemnation. Because we are in Christ, we no longer live according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit; we no longer walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. We no longer set our minds on the things of the flesh. To do so would mean death. We set our minds on the things of the Spirit which is life and peace. A mind that is set on the flesh is at odds with God, unable to submit to the law of God, and cannot please God.

Those who are in the Spirit and have the Spirit of God in them, share in the resurrection of Jesus the Christ. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is the same Spirit that will raise us from the dead and give eternal life to our mortal bodies.

(12-17) Heirs with Christ
Those who are in Christ and have Christ in them are the sons and daughters of God. We are adopted into His family and made heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, meaning that we will share in all that they have. When we suffer with Christ down here on Earth, we should not get depressed about it, but should remember that we will also be glorified and reign with Him one day.

(18-21) Future Glory
When compared to future Heavenly glory, our current earthly sufferings are nothing. And we are not the only ones suffering. All of creation is currently groaning, in bondage to corruption, eagerly and patiently waiting for the day when Christ will come back and permanently deliver His creation and bring into existence a new Heaven and a new earth.

Favorite verse: (18) For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
