(1-5) Paul’s Ministry to the Church
Paul desires to encourage the Colossian Christians and the Christians at Laodicea so they will increase in love for one another and have complete assurance and understanding of God’s mystery. This mystery concerns Christ and His work on the cross. All the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Him. When we are in Christ, God’s wisdom and knowledge is made available to us so we will not be deluded by false apostles and questionable arguments.
(6-15) Alive in Christ
It is not enough for us to receive Christ, we must continue to walk in Him in faith and thanksgiving. We must become as established and rooted in Christ as a mature tree is rooted in the ground.
Christ has canceled the debt and nailed the sins of all those who trust in Him to the cross. We are no longer slaves to the old life, and this is signified through baptism. We were once dead in trespasses and the uncircumcision of the flesh, but through faith in Christ we have been made alive with Him and have had all of our trespasses forgiven.
(16-23) Let No One Disqualify You
Our new life in Christ has given us freedom from man-made rules regarding such things as food and drink, festivals, asceticism and angel worship. Therefore, we should not let those who come up with and promote these man-made rules judge us for not following them. Our faith, and the freedom that comes from our faith, depends on Christ and Him alone. Christ is the Head of the church and we receive our rules from Him.
