1 Timothy 1
(3-11) Warning Against False Teachers
In his first letter to Timothy, Paul warns him to be on guard against false teachers and those who magnify the law above the Gospel of Jesus the Christ. God gave the law and the law is good, if it is used lawfully. However, the law is not for those who do right and those who have been redeemed by Christ. The law is for those who remain in bondage to sin.
(12-20) Christ Jesus Came to Save Sinners
Despite his past behavior, Paul is thankful that Christ showed him mercy and appointed him to serve God. When Paul (then Saul) was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent, he was acting ignorantly in unbelief. Even when he was in this state, God’s grace overflowed toward him and brought him to faith and love in Jesus the Christ. This is a reminder that Christ left Heaven and came to earth in order to save sinners. The greater the sinner, the greater the out pour of mercy toward that sinner. No one is beyond the reach of God’s grace.
