New Testament In a Year: December 12 – Revelation 4

Revelation 4
(1-11) The Throne in Heaven
Revelation has always been one of my favorite books of the Bible to read, but it is also one of the most difficult to comprehend. I think John did his best to describe and explain all that he saw and heard while he was “in the Spirit,” but I don’t think the human language has any words that can accurately describe the full glories of Heaven and the majesty of the Trinity. These worship song lyrics are pretty apt: Indescribable, uncontainable / All powerful, untameable / Awestruck we fall to our knees as we humbly proclaim / You are amazing God.

In this Scripture passage, a depiction of God’s throne is given. Imagine seeing the One who has an appearance of jasper and carnelian, surrounded by a rainbow that has the appearance of an emerald.

Imagine: the twenty-four elders. the lightning and rumblings and thunder. the torches of fire. the sea of glass, like crystal. the four living creatures.

Each of the creatures and all of the elders give God worship that He is worthy of. Day and night, without stopping, they proclaim the holiness and the power of God. They recognize Him as past, present, and future. They recognize Him as the Creator of all things that exist.

Favorite verse: (11) “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
